What is Croatia googling?
GOOGLE TRENDS 2018
The year is nearing its end and soon comes the time of New Year’s resolutions. But, what about the decisions and resolutions we already made, or perhaps the searches we made? Is it also time to clear the search history? Google was meticulously gathering data about the queries of users and has published trends that describe 2018. Regardless of cleaning one’s search history, Croatia has terms that describe its interests, or keywords that Croatians searched. These are mainly football and soap operas.
Globally users mostly searched for the FIFA World Cup, which was also the most popular search in Croatia. The success of the Croatian national team will always be remembered. Seven players from the National team and their head coach were on the list of the most searched people. The footballers Dejan Lovren, Luka Modrić and the head coach of the National team Zlatko Dalić were also one the list of most popular search terms.
Another Sporting Year
Also, the first place for the most popular event in Croatia goes to the World Cup. This list of most searched for events contains six matches played by the National team, but also Mother’s Day. Alongside football, events like Wimbledon and the European Handball Championship are always popular. The Handball Championship was held in January of 2018 and was one of the most searched for terms and events in 2017. Therefore, it is not surprising that it found it’s place on this year’s most popular searches as well.
News from the East
Besides big sports event and famous sportspeople, 2018 was also marked by searches related to Istanbul. The second most searched term was the Istanbul convention. The signing and ratifying of the Convention caused protests and counter-protests and revealed a side of Croatia that is something ones does not want to see. On the other hand, what Croatians like to see, is the TV series İstanbullu Gelin. Given that is the third most popular search term in 2018, the fans are surely looking forward to new seasons of the popular series.
In 2018 it has been 20 years since the first use of the Google search engine. The ways we search are changing. Queries are becoming more personal, they offer an insight into what people need, want and intend. People are turning towards searching for information and inspiration. By feeding their curiosity, users want to learn how to do something.
The Bitter end of Musicians
Globally, after the World Cup the most searched terms was Avicii (Tim Bergling), who died a tragic death in April 2018. Croatia also lost one of its greatest musicians – Oliver Dragojević. The famous singer passed away after fighting a difficult illness, and before he returned to his birthplace, the small town of Vela Luka, he once again got a standing ovation from Croatia. It is not surprising that his name found its place on the list of most popular searches and people in 2018.
Not to leave a bitter taste at the end, 2018 in Croatia was marked by another search term. It is the reality show Zadruga, produced by the Serbian RTV Pink. The participants of the show are competing for prize money while living in an artificial city that spans over 3 hectares of land and while under the watchful eye of 140 cameras. Zadruga is the most searched term in neighbouring Serbia, and apparently the show was also successful in the region. Given this, as long as there are bread and games, Croatians are not interested in much else.
